The best thing you can do for your skin is to understand it in its entirety. How can you care for your skin if you don’t know what it needs? We can’t afford to just throw expensive products at ourselves thinking it’s going to work. Only because something worked for your best friend doesn’t mean it’s going to work for you. Balance is key to this most complex organ. Not only must you find out how your skin is in different climates, how it reacts to products, exercise, etc. but you also need to know how to counteract those reactions. Our skin is the most significant organ in our body, and it would be in our best interest to understand your skin type so we can have the best skin possible.

If you don’t know your skin type already, there is a way to figure it out. It would be highly recommended to see your dermatologist for best results, but if you would prefer to diagnose in the comforts of your own home, do this simple step. Try the bare-faced method. Wash your face with a mild cleanser and pat dry. Do not add anything to your face such as toners, moisturizers, etc. Nothing! Wait for about an hour or so and examine your face. Pay attention to your cheeks, forehead, and nose. If it’s quite tight, you more than likely have dry skin. If your skin is a little oily only in certain places, then you may be combination/normal skin. If you are quite oily all over your face, you have an oily skin type. You can also determine your skin type by using oil blotting sheets. Little to no oil means dry skin, a medium amount of oil can mean normal/combination skin, and a drenched sheet is evident to oily skin.

1. Dry Skin is maintainable with a little more effort. First of all, it can feel tight, parched, and even flaky throughout the day. It is due to many things some we can control such as diet and products to use, whereas stuff we cannot change like genetics, climate, and hormonal changes. Something to help dry skin is to exfoliate lightly to help skin cells to turnover. Products are more readily penetrable when pores are clean and open. Use products specifically for dry skin such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and oils to help soothe the tightness and balance out the skin.

2. Normal/Combination Skin can be a headache when you have dry spots on your cheeks but oil on your forehead and nose. The key here is to find a moisturizer that isn’t too heavy but can retain moisture to areas that it is most needed. Gentle exfoliation daily with little moisturizer is best. If you need more in certain spots, apply more, but too much can do more harm than good.

3. Oily skin type is a good thing. They say people with oily skin tend to age nicer as they grow older so be happy you will still look fabulous when you’re gray. Oils help our skin to be more supple, look younger, and is less prone to wrinkling. But it can also get congested and clogged from the overproduction of sebum. Physical exfoliators or enzymatic exfoliators work best with this skin type. Balancing washes can work wonders too.

Sensitive Skin needs extra TLC. The best rule of thumb for sensitive skin to find what works for your skin. By doing this though is to work in one new product/formula at a time. See if the face wash works for you for a few weeks before trying that new moisturizer you bought. This rule applies to both skin care and cosmetics. We want to minimize inflammation, flare-ups, breakouts, and irritation. So take it one step at a time.

Just keep in mind that our skin type can change over time. Be mindful of your skin. All skin is beautiful. It’s all about bringing out the most out of our skin types.

Tending to a busy life, in this day and age is almost inevitable. With juggling the kids, work life, and your time can seem impossible. Optimal skin care can seem so out of reach. The celebrities all have glowing, beautiful, seemingly ageless skin with an army caring for their skin. Don’t get stressed out. That ages you even more.
