Once you have decided to have breast implants, first you must find a reputable plastic surgeon. Do this carefully and with some research. There is no rating system for plastic surgeons so your best bet is to try to get recommendations from former clients. If you are unable to obtain obtain any recommendations, then at least have more than one consultation. Horror stories abound about botched boob jobs and none of them are funny. In general, the more expensive the surgeon's price, the more highly skilled they may be, but you cannot really use price as a guide to quality work. Frankly, it is just as difficult to determine the level of skill in a plastic surgeon as in any other medical specialty but if you ask around, you can usually find someone who has already been there and it is quite ethical for you to ask if the doctor has any clients who he can use as references. They probably will not be able to give you any names in order to protect patient confidentiality but it doesn't hurt to ask. You should also take time to look at their diplomas on the wall. If the surgeon did their training at Walladoda University in Tibet, maybe you should pass on this one. If you don't see any diplomas, run, don't walk to the nearest exit. If the surgeon did their training in a foreign country, this might be a negative factor, but that depends on where. There are top notch medical schools all over the world but it could be something you want to investigate further with the surgeon. Do not be afraid to ask about their training and credentials. This is elective surgery and you are paying top dollar for it, so it is your right to be selective. If the surgeon can drop names of famous or rich people who they have provided services for, this is usually a good sign. Famous and rich people usually have ways of finding quality because they can afford the best. Although not foolproof, this is often the highest recommendation you will ever find; however, since surgical procedures are confidential, there is not much you can find out about former patients. Take note that most plastic surgeons require payment in advance. Generally this is because there is no medical insurance involved unless it is a mastectomy procedure or injury correction.

Breast Implants
The Consultation

In the process of selecting a plastic surgeon, you will be completing part of the initial consultation during the interview because while you are interviewing the doctor he or she is also interviewing you. The doctor will ask you specifically about the shape and size of breasts you would like to obtain. You will be given books of pictures of breasts to look at, most of which will be of their former patients. These are before and after pictures. You will probably be amazed at the results in the book and a little surprised at how many strange and even unattractive shapes that are occupied by that part of the female body known as the breast. You will most likely go back a second time or third time for pictures and measurements. Many plastic surgeons now have computer programs that will take your picture and superimpose a picture of the type of breasts you have chosen so you can have a rough idea what the new breasts might look like on you. This is a clever and useful program but not completely accurate. After implantation, the new breasts will not look "exactly" like the picture, but the result should be close. At this time, you will also complete all the necessary forms and paperwork.

Breast Implants
Considerations

After the interviews and consultations are completed, a day for the surgery will be scheduled. Depending on the doctor, their location, and the extent of their own facilities, the surgical procedure can be performed either at the doctor's office or clinic or in the hospital. If the doctors office or clinic is properly equipped and staffed, this alternative is preferable because it it considerably less costly than at the hospital. The entire process from pre-op to post-op to release takes about four hours. The time required can vary considerably depending on how much reconstruction is involved. Breasts that suffer from extreme sagging usually require more extensive alterations and possibly a complete breast reconstruction. Breast reconstruction is not the same as a simple breast implant procedure and that issue will not be dealt with here in any detail. Breast reconstruction may involve a breast reduction or other major repositioning of breast tissue from one location to another. Although there may be a small amount of tissue removal, there is no major tissue relocation in simple breast implant procedures.  However, there are many other pre and post operative factors to consider before making your decision.    back   next
